Difficulties with the 2010 diesel Toyota Fortuner: Weak engine and possible swirl flap control errors

Hey guys, I'm having some problems with my 2010 diesel Toyota Fortuner, which now has about 55591 km on it. The check engine light is on, the engine feels weak, twitches when accelerating and makes a loud hissing noise. It also shakes quite a bit when idling. I think it could be a fault with the swirl flap control on the intake manifold. Have any of you had similar experiences and how did it go at the mechanic? I would really appreciate some tips!

Summary of the thread

A 2010 diesel Toyota Fortuner is experiencing engine issues, including a check engine light, weak performance, twitching during acceleration, a loud hissing noise, and shaking when idling. The suspected cause is a fault with the swirl flap control on the intake manifold. A similar issue in a 2013 diesel Toyota Hilux was resolved by replacing the defective gearshift intake manifold control, suggesting that checking and potentially replacing this component could solve the problem. Immediate attention is advised to prevent further damage.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, you've got a guess there, which in my experience is very likely correct. I had the same problem with my 2013 diesel Toyota Hilux and the signs were pretty similar to yours: twitching when accelerating, engine light, the whole nine yards. It turned out that the control of the gearshift intake manifold was actually defective. In my case, the mechanics had to remove it and replace it with a new one. The whole thing was definitely not a walk in the park, it was a pretty serious problem. Without this part working properly, everything goes haywire. So your gut feeling about the swirl flap control could very well be correct. I can only advise you to have it checked as soon as possible. Waiting any longer could lead to further damage. Hopefully you can get it sorted without too much trouble, mate. Take care!

Hey, thanks so much for your reply, you really helped me listen to exactly what I was afraid of. Could you remember what you paid for the repair and if any other issues have come up since? Would love to hear your feedback!

Hey, no problem! I'm glad if I can help. So about the costs: I put down €465 to replace the control unit for the gearshift intake manifold, so it's no small price to pay. But since then my Hilux has been running like a champ again. After the mechanic fixed the swirl flap control on the intake manifold, fortunately no new problems have arisen. So it was worth it for me - I hope it works just as well for you! So keep your chin up!

Wow, 465€ is a lot of money, but I'm glad to hear that your Hilux is running well now. That gives me hope. Thanks again for sharing your experience. I'll be heading straight to the mechanic tomorrow morning and now have a better feel for what to expect. Keep your fingers crossed that I get off as lightly as you did. Take care and look after yourself!
