Difficulties with the 2018 Toyota GT86: Engine shuts down and lights flicker

Hey guys, I have some concerns with my 2018 Toyota GT86, gasoline, with just under 129,000 kilometers on the clock. Lately the engine has been shutting off by itself, the ABS is not working properly, the lights are flickering or getting dimmer and the battery seems to be low when starting the engine. My guess is that something is wrong with the alternator. Have any of you had similar problems and what was your experience at the garage? After my last visit to the mechanic, I'm honestly a bit unsure. Thanks for your tips!

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Toyota GT86 is experiencing issues with the engine shutting down, ABS malfunctioning, flickering lights, and a weak battery. The initial suspicion is a faulty alternator. However, a similar case with a 2015 GT86 revealed that the engine control unit (ECU) was the root cause, requiring replacement. The ECU is crucial for vehicle operation, and its failure can lead to various problems. Replacing the ECU resolved the issues, suggesting it as a potential solution for the current problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I understand exactly how you feel, this sounds a lot like the same problem I had with my 2015 Toyota GT86. The symptoms were similar: engine stalling sporadically, problems with ABS, lights dimming and the battery was always a bit weak at startup. Eventually I found out that the engine control unit was faulty. The entire control unit had to be replaced in the workshop. It was quite a hassle, and yes, it was definitely a serious problem. The guy at the garage said that the ECU is basically the brain of the car, and if it's not working properly, it can lead to a number of strange symptoms. I'm sorry you're having to deal with the same problem, but at least you're not the only one. I hope your garage can sort it out quickly. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the answer, that really helps. Your problems sound exactly like mine. The engine control unit sounds sensible, I hadn't thought of that. How expensive was the replacement for you? Have there been any further complications since the replacement? I hope your GT86 is running smoothly again.

Hey, no problem! Well, the replacement cost me €1000. Quite a chunk of money, I tell you. But it was worth it. Since the replacement, the car has been running like clockwork again. The issue with the alternator was definitely a problem, but since the workshop visit, the fault with the alternator has been rectified. No further complications or anything. Hope your GT86 is back in top form soon!

Wow, that's no mean feat. I'm not thrilled about spending so much money, but if it solves my problem and gets my GT86 going again, then so be it. I'm really relieved that the alternator is working and your car has been running smoothly ever since. That gives me hope. I will go to the garage tomorrow morning and report back what they say. Thanks again for your help, it really means a lot to me!
