Discovery Diesel Acting Up: Rough Running & Power Loss

Hey everyone! Having some trouble with my 2016 Discovery diesel. Engine light is on and the car's running rough, low power, jerky acceleration, and burning through fuel like crazy. I'm suspecting the intake manifold pressure sensor might be acting up. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and got it fixed? Would love to hear about your experiences with repairs and what the actual problem turned out to be. What should I expect when taking it to the shop?

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars, not a pro mechanic but I've dealt with my share of issues. I had a really similar problem with my 2014 Range Rover Sport diesel last year. Same symptoms, rough running, poor acceleration, and terrible fuel economy. Turned out to be exactly what you're suspecting, the intake manifold pressure sensor wiring harness was shot. Got it fixed at my regular workshop for around 95 Euro, mostly labor costs since they had to trace the wiring issue. Before I can give you more specific advice, could you share: Any specific error codes you're getting? When did the symptoms first start? Have you had any recent work done on the engine? The Land Rover diesels from that era can be a bit tricky, but most of these sensor issues are pretty straightforward fixes once properly diagnosed. Let me know those details and I can share more about my experience!

Hey, thanks for the detailed response! I had the car serviced about 3 months ago at 128355 KM and everything was fine until last week. Haven't had any other work done recently. The error code I'm getting is P0237, and the symptoms started quite suddenly during highway driving. The engine just lost power and started running rough. Good to hear your similar issue wasn't too expensive to fix! Did you notice any warning signs before it completely went bad? Just hoping it's actually the sensor and not something more serious. These diesels can be temperamental sometimes, but she's been pretty reliable up until now.

Hey again! Thanks for sharing those details. Wow, that P0237 code is exactly what I had with my Range Rover! Seems we're definitely dealing with the same issue here. Yeah, looking back, I did notice some minor things before it went completely bad, occasional hesitation when accelerating from a stop, and the fuel economy slowly getting worse over a couple of weeks. But I ignored those early signs until that one day on a road trip when it just went into limp mode. The funny thing is, I actually tried cleaning the sensor first (complete waste of time in my case). The wiring harness was the real culprit, it had some corrosion where the connector meets the sensor. When they replaced the harness, it was like having a completely different car again! Power came back instantly, and my fuel economy improved by about 25%. One tip though, make sure they check the actual sensor too while they're at it. In my case, the sensor itself was fine, but I've heard from other Land Rover owners that sometimes both the sensor and wiring need replacing. Better to check everything while they're in there. My mechanic also mentioned these issues are pretty common on our diesel engines after about 100,000 KM. Don't stress too much, it's annoying but definitely fixable! Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out.

Thanks so much for all this info, it's really helpful! Actually, now that you mention those early warning signs, I did notice the fuel economy getting a bit worse over the past few weeks, but I just blamed it on my driving style. Guess I should've paid more attention to that! Really relieved to hear it's likely just the wiring harness and potentially the sensor. I'll definitely get both checked out when I take it in tomorrow. That's a great tip about having them inspect everything while they're working on it, might as well be thorough and avoid another shop visit down the road. It's funny how these cars can be so similar with their issues. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's made me feel much better about getting this sorted. I'll probably post an update once I get it fixed to let everyone know what the actual problem was. Thanks again for taking the time to help out!
