Discovery Engine Knock: Power Loss and Jerking Issues?

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Discovery's at 84757 KM and just had its service last month. Actually, I've been pretty consistent with premium fuel, but these symptoms only started showing up about two weeks ago. You might be onto something with the carbon deposits, it makes sense given my symptoms. Haven't gotten the diagnostic codes read yet, but heading to get that done tomorrow. Honestly, your issue sounds spot-on similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any improvement in performance right after the cleaning? Just trying to gauge if it's worth pursuing this route first before looking into other potential causes.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, with those symptoms and mileage, carbon deposits definitely seem likely. And to answer your question, the improvement after the cleaning was like night and day! The engine felt way smoother literally right after I drove it out of the shop. Just to share a bit more from my experience, before the cleaning, my Sport was really struggling, especially when merging onto highways. The jerking was most noticeable between 2000-3000 RPM, and the knocking sound would get worse when the engine was under load. Sound familiar? After the cleaning, not only did all those issues disappear, but my fuel economy improved by about 15%. The engine went back to running as smooth as butter, and that annoying knock completely vanished. Even my mechanic said he could tell the difference just from the sound of the engine idling. One thing though, make sure to get those diagnostic codes read first. Would be good to rule out any other issues before going for the cleaning. Sometimes similar symptoms can have different causes, you know? Let us know what the codes say when you get them checked tomorrow! P.S. Good call on consistently using premium fuel, that definitely helps, but carbon deposits can still build up over time even with the good stuff.

Thanks so much for that detailed response! You've basically described my exact situation, especially that part about the jerking between 2000-3000 RPM and the knocking under load. It's honestly a relief to hear the cleaning made such a big difference for you. I'll definitely report back after getting those diagnostic codes tomorrow. Really hoping it's just carbon deposits like in your case, because that 15% fuel economy improvement sounds amazing right now! My wallet could use a break from all this extra fuel consumption. And hey, even if it costs around the same as what you paid, it seems worth it if it sorts out all these issues. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. It's given me a much clearer direction on what to look into. I'll keep you posted on what my diagnostic results show!

Hello everyone, I'm currently facing a couple of issues with my 2023 Land Rover Defender, Diesel, 3028km. It's jerking when accelerating at normal speeds. Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so, how did you resolve it? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently on a vacation trip and these issues are causing quite a bit of inconvenience. Is it related to spark plugs? Thanks in advance!

Since your Defender is a diesel, it doesn't have spark plugs. The jerking could be due to a number of reasons such as issues with the fuel injectors, fuel filter, or even the transmission. However, given that your vehicle is quite new with low mileage, it's best to contact your dealership or a trusted mechanic as soon as possible. This could be a warranty issue. In the meantime, try to avoid hard acceleration to prevent further potential damage. Please keep us updated on the situation.

Hey there! I had a very similar issue with my 2010 Range Rover Sport (gas engine). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through. My car was doing the same dance, power loss, jerking, knocking sounds, and drinking fuel like crazy. Turned out there were carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. Had to take it to my trusted mechanic who did a thorough cleaning of the chambers and valves. The whole thing set me back about 425 Euro, but it sorted out all those issues completely. Before jumping to conclusions though, what's your mileage, and have you noticed any other symptoms? Also, have you had the diagnostic codes read? That would help narrow things down. I'm also curious if you've been using the same fuel type consistently? Sometimes poor fuel quality can cause similar issues.
