Discovery Overheating: Faulty Air Damper Control Issue?

Hey car enthusiasts, my 2016 Discovery diesel is giving me trouble. Engine light popped on and the temperature gauge is running hot. I suspect the controlled air damper might be acting up. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and got it fixed? Really interested in workshop solutions and repair costs. Thanks for any input!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars and had a really similar issue with my 2018 Range Rover Velar diesel. These cooling problems can be tricky! Had the same symptoms, engine light and temp issues. Turned out the radiator shutter wiring harness was shot, hidden right behind the bumper. My mechanic had to replace the entire harness, cost me about 215 Euro, including labor. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you tell me if you're noticing any other symptoms? Like unusual fan noise or drop in power? Also, how many miles/kilometers are on your Discovery? This info would help me give you more specific advice. BTW, if it's what I think it is, don't wait too long to get it checked. These cooling issues can get worse pretty quickly. Let me know those details and I'll try to help more!

Thanks for the detailed response! My Discovery has 132892 KM on it and just had its service last month. Been experiencing a slight power lag when accelerating, especially in eco mode, but no weird fan noises so far. The temperature issue seems worse during stop-and-go driving. Really appreciate the heads up about the radiator shutter wiring, I'll definitely get that checked out ASAP. Good to know about the repair costs too. Would rather fix it now than risk bigger problems later!

Hey again! Thanks for those details about your Discovery. Man, that power lag combined with the temperature spikes during stop-and-go definitely rings a bell, it's almost exactly what I experienced with my Velar! Given what you're describing, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I dealt with. The wiring harness issue I mentioned started exactly the same way, temperature spikes in slow traffic and that annoying lag in eco mode. Mine had about 145000 KM when it happened, so we're in the same ballpark. Quick tip from my experience, while you're waiting to get it checked, try avoiding eco mode for now. I found it helped reduce the strain until I could get it fixed. Also, keep an eye on your coolant level, just to be safe. I learned that the hard way when I pushed mine a bit too far! Since you just had service last month, maybe check with them if they noticed anything off with the cooling system? Sometimes these issues start small and worsen gradually. Let me know how it goes with the repair! I'm really curious if it turns out to be the same issue. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the follow-up advice! I'll definitely steer clear of eco mode for now, makes total sense about reducing the strain. Just checked the coolant level and it's actually a bit low, so thanks for that tip! I've already called my mechanic and booked it in for tomorrow morning. Actually called the service center too, and funny enough, they mentioned they'd noticed some slight irregularities in the cooling system readings but it wasn't critical then. Guess it's progressed faster than expected! Really appreciate all your help and detailed insights, especially about your experience with the Velar. I'll update you once I get it sorted. Hope it's just the wiring harness and nothing more serious!
