Thanks for sharing your experience. Your symptoms matched mine perfectly. I am dealing with this right now and worried the vacuum leak could cause additional problems if left unchecked. My local shop quoted me but I want to compare prices. Do you remember roughly what you paid for the full EGR valve replacement? Also curious if you had any related issues pop up since the repair or if it fully resolved your rough idle and emissions problems?

Finally got my car back from the mechanic last week after dealing with the same EGR valve problem. The total repair came to 355€, which included replacing the defective EGR valve and cleaning out all the related passages. Really worth every cent considering how much better the car runs now. Since the repair, all the original issues have completely disappeared, no more rough idle, the vacuum leak is gone, and fuel consumption is back to normal. The emissions test I did afterwards came back perfect. It has been about 10 days of trouble-free driving with no check engine light or other warning signals. Just make sure they do a thorough cleaning of the intake system while replacing the EGR valve. Mine was pretty gunked up from running with the faulty valve, and cleaning it all properly prevents the problem from coming back. The automotive repair shop should check the surrounding components too since a bad EGR valve can sometimes cause related issues. The price I paid seems pretty standard for this type of work. The part itself is not cheap, and there is quite a bit of labor involved to do the job right.

Thanks for the advice. I took my car to the shop yesterday and got the EGR valve replaced. Had to pay 420€ for parts and labor, which was a bit more than expected but worth it for proper automotive repair work. The mechanic showed me the old valve which was completely clogged. They also found a small vacuum leak in the intake manifold gasket which they fixed while doing the job. Good thing I brought it in when I did, they said it could have caused serious engine damage if left unfixed. After the repair, the rough idle is completely gone and the check engine light cleared up. No more black smoke or hissing sounds. Already noticed my fuel consumption has dropped back to normal levels after just a few days of driving. First time I actually felt good about a repair bill since they took the time to explain everything and show me the damaged parts. Definitely learned my lesson about not waiting too long when these kinds of symptoms show up.

Had similar vehicle emissions issues on a 2018 Dodge Charger. The symptoms matched exactly, power loss, rough idle, check engine light, and excessive fuel consumption. The automotive repair confirmed a stuck EGR valve, which was completely clogged with carbon deposits. The issue was indeed serious as the faulty EGR valve was causing exhaust gases to flow incorrectly, creating a vacuum leak and affecting engine performance. The valve was completely jammed in the open position, leading to poor combustion and the black smoke you described. The repair required complete EGR valve replacement along with cleaning of the EGR passages. They also checked and cleaned the MAP sensor since these issues often occur together. After replacement, the engine ran smoothly again with normal fuel consumption and no more check engine warnings. Pro tip: Request inspection of the intake manifold while they have things apart. Carbon buildup there often contributes to EGR problems. These symptoms should not be ignored as continued operation can lead to more severe engine damage and increased emissions over time.
