Dying Eclipse Cross: Water Sensor or Worse? Fix Inside
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Eclipse Cross Hybrid is experiencing issues with stalling, starting problems, and a persistent engine malfunction warning light, particularly during rainy weather. The suspected cause is a faulty water sensor or related wiring issues. A similar case with a 2018 Outlander PHEV revealed that water intrusion into the wiring harness caused intermittent shorts, especially in wet conditions. The suggested solution involves replacing damaged wiring, adding waterproofing, and installing protective covers to prevent future water damage.

Thanks for the detailed response! My Eclipse Cross has 83618 KM on it and just had its service last month. The warning light that keeps coming on is the engine malfunction indicator (yellow engine symbol), and yeah, I've noticed it happens more frequently during rainy weather. Haven't had any sensor issues before this though. Your experience with the Outlander PHEV sounds really similar to what I'm dealing with. Would love to hear more about the specific repair process, might save me some headache at the mechanic's!

Hey again! Yeah, after hearing those details, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I experienced with my Outlander PHEV. The rainy weather connection is particularly telling, that's exactly how mine acted up too! Just to share more about my repair experience: The mechanic found that water was getting into the wiring harness connection near the sensor, causing intermittent shorts. That's why it got worse in wet weather. The fix wasn't just about replacing the sensor, they had to: 1. Replace about 20cm of damaged wiring 2. Add extra waterproofing to the connection points 3. Install a protective cover to prevent future water damage The whole thing took about 4 hours to fix. One tip that saved me some money, I asked them to check all the other sensor connections while they were at it. Found a couple that were starting to corrode too, so they sealed those up preventively. Given your mileage (mine was around 76,000 km when this happened) and the similar symptoms, I'd bet you're dealing with the same issue. The yellow engine light is definitely a match too. I'd suggest getting it checked soon, mine started getting worse pretty quickly after the first few incidents. Let me know if you need more specific details about the repair. Happy to share the exact parts they used if that helps!

That's incredibly helpful info, thanks so much! I'm definitely going to mention all these details to my mechanic, especially about checking the wiring harness and other sensor connections. The fact that yours started getting worse quickly is making me want to book an appointment ASAP. Really appreciate you sharing your experience and the specific repair details. Knowing it's likely a 4-hour job with similar parts needed helps me budget for it too. At least I won't be going in completely blind now! Will update the thread once I get it sorted out. Thanks again for taking the time to explain everything!

Hey there! I have some experience working on hybrids and went through something very similar with my 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I faced, unusual stalling, starting issues, warning lights. Turns out it was indeed a faulty sensor cable connection. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The fix involved replacing some wiring and reconnecting the sensor properly, cost me about 365€ in total. But before jumping to conclusions, could you share: How many miles/km on your Eclipse Cross? Which warning light exactly is coming on? Does it happen more when the weather is wet? This might help pinpoint if it's the same issue I had. BTW, have you had any previous sensor-related problems? Let me know these details, and I can share more specifics about the repair process.
