E Klasse oil pressure warning

I'm concerned about a problem with my 2002 Mercedes E Klasse with a gasoline engine. The car has only 55145 km on it, but I'm getting an oil pressure warning light. I suspect oil contamination, and I am worried about potential engine damage. Could an exceeded maintenance interval be the reason?

Oil sludge in these engines is a pain. I had similar oil pressure issues with my E Klasse. Do you know if the previous owner kept up with the oil changes or did lots of short trips? These engines don't like that very much. What does the oil look like on the dipstick?

I am not sure about the previous owner but how did you solve it? And what kind of engine damage could this cause?

Well, mine wasn't pretty. The contamination led to oil sludge and that affected the oil pressure. Best to get to a workshop and have them check the oil pump and the oil filter. I had to have an oil change service and some cleaning done to get the pressure back to normal. Cost me 165€ - maybe you are lucky too!

Thank you for the swift advice. I did take it to the workshop and it seems indeed the maintenance interval was exceeded. They did an oil change and the oil pressure is back to normal. Your comments were extremely helpful.
