Eclipse Cross: Black Smoke & Power Loss, Fuel Pump Issue?
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Eclipse Cross diesel is experiencing black smoke, power loss, engine cutouts, jerking during acceleration, poor fuel efficiency, and a check engine light. Initially suspected to be a fuel pump issue, similar symptoms in another Mitsubishi model were traced to a faulty wiring harness causing electrical issues. It is suggested to have the wiring harness checked by a Mitsubishi specialist, as this problem is common in similar models and could prevent unnecessary fuel pump replacement costs.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's got 99662 KM on the clock and had its last service about 3 months ago. Those electrical issues you mentioned are really interesting, definitely something I hadn't considered. The symptoms do sound pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. Might be worth checking out the wiring harness first before jumping to conclusions about the fuel pump. That repair cost sounds way better than what I was expecting to pay too!

Hey again! Thanks for the additional info about your Eclipse Cross. Yeah, after hearing about your mileage, I'm even more convinced it could be similar to what I dealt with. Just remembered, right before my ASX started showing these symptoms, I had also gotten it serviced. Sometimes these issues can pop up when something gets disturbed during routine maintenance. Quick heads up, I originally took mine to a general mechanic who kept insisting it was the fuel pump (would've cost me around €800!). That's why I specifically went to my regular workshop for a second opinion, and am I glad I did! The wiring harness issue was actually pretty common in our generation of Mitsubishi diesels. Since you're at around 100K km, it's right in that sweet spot where these electrical gremlins tend to show up. Mine started acting up at about 85K km. Just make sure whoever checks it out knows their way around Mitsubishi's electrical systems, it can be a bit tricky to diagnose if they're not familiar with it. Let me know how it goes! Hope you get it sorted as easily (and cheaply) as I did.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You've definitely saved me from potentially spending a fortune on replacing the fuel pump unnecessarily. I'll make sure to take it to the Mitsubishi specialist workshop in town rather than my regular mechanic. It's really helpful to know about these electrical issues being common in our models. I'll schedule an appointment first thing tomorrow morning and specifically mention the wiring harness issue you experienced. Even if it turns out to be something different, at least I'm going in more informed now. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and those follow-up details about the mechanic situation. Will definitely update you once I get it checked out! Thanks again for all your help!

Hey there! I had some experience with similar issues on my 2018 Mitsubishi ASX diesel (some car expertise). Actually, the symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I faced last year. Initially thought it was the fuel pump too, but turned out to be a faulty wiring harness that was causing all sorts of electrical issues with the fuel system. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The repair including parts and labor cost me about 95€, and it's been running perfectly since then. The black smoke and power loss completely disappeared. Could you share which engine variant you have in your Eclipse Cross? Also, how many miles/km are on it? This info would help me tell if you're likely dealing with the same issue I had. Tip: Get it checked soon, driving with these symptoms could potentially cause more damage.
