Ecosport fuel tank ventilation leak
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Ford Ecosport with a gasoline engine is experiencing a check engine light and occasional stalling when idling, indicating a potential fuel tank ventilation system leak. The issue may stem from a defective activated charcoal filter, a stuck purge valve, or cracked hoses. Testing the charcoal canister can be complex, so replacing it might be necessary. After replacement, the vehicle runs smoothly, resolving the issue.

Thanks! So, if it's the charcoal canister, is there a way to test it, or is it just a matter of replacing it and hoping for the best? Also, will this affect my fuel efficiency?

Testing it would be fiddly, needing smoke and whatnot. My Corsa ended up needing a new canister after all. As for fuel efficiency, yeah, a big enough EVAP leak can mess with the air/fuel ratio because the system isn't working right. Probably best to take it to a workshop.

Thanks, I took your advice and brought it in. Turns out it was a defective activated charcoal filter as suspected. The repair cost was 275€. Runs like a champ now!

Sounds like EVAP alright. Had similar stalling issues on my old Opel Corsa after I filled the tank to the brim one time. It could be a stuck purge valve, or cracked hoses, but if you're getting codes related to the charcoal canister, start there.
