Ecosport high fuel consumption and stalling

My 2010 Ford Ecosport (gasoline engine) is giving me some trouble. It’s got about 207000 km on it. I've noticed the fuel consumption is way up, and the engine stalls sometimes when idling. The check engine light is also on, and I see some smoke when I accelerate. Could this be the MAF sensor?

Sounds like a likely culprit. A faulty MAF sensor can definitely cause those symptoms. The ECU relies on the MAF reading to determine the correct air/fuel mixture. When it fails, it can result in a higher fuel consumption, engine stalling and even smoke because of incomplete combustion. Have you checked for any error codes?

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't checked any error codes yet. Is that something I can do myself, or do I need special equipment?

You can check the codes yourself with an OBD2 scanner, they are relatively inexpensive and very useful for diagnosing issues. Based on your symptoms and the age of the car, I still think it's likely the MAF. However, without knowing the specific error code, it’s difficult to confirm. I’d still advise going to a workshop.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I took it to the shop, and you were right, it was the MAF sensor. Repair cost me 365€. Runs like new now!
