Edge Diesel Engine Stalling Rough Running

My 2022 Ford Edge with the diesel engine is giving me fits. It's got 178344 km on the clock. Basically, it won't start sometimes, or it will stall out when idling. Plus, the check engine light is on, and when it does run, it runs rough, like it's missing. I've also noticed the fuel consumption is way up. Hooked it up to a reader and found an error in the error memory, but I haven't pinpointed it yet. Could a defective fuel pump cause all this, or should I start looking at the fuel injectors? Could it maybe be a bad cable or a faulty plug connection?

Summary of the thread

A 2022 Ford Edge with a diesel engine is experiencing starting issues, stalling when idling, rough running, and increased fuel consumption, with the check engine light on. The problem may be caused by a defective fuel pump or faulty wiring and connections, particularly at the fuel pump's plug connector. It is suggested to inspect these connections for looseness or corrosion before considering more extensive repairs. A professional workshop diagnosis is recommended to accurately identify and resolve the issue.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my Edge – though I have the petrol engine. Stalling, rough running... the whole nine yards. It could be the fuel pump going bad, but before you go ripping things apart, have you checked the wiring and connections to the fuel pump itself? Especially the plug connector. Sometimes a loose or corroded connection can cause all sorts of weirdness. Fuel pumps deliver fuel from the fuel tank to the engine's fuel injection system. A bad electrical connection will cause the pump to not get enough electricity or the signal that it should get electricity. That can easily cause the symptoms you describe.

Interesting. So, when you say 'wiring and connections', are we talking about tracing the whole fuel system, including all the fuel injectors, or just focusing on the fuel pump itself and its immediate wiring? What exactly did you look for when you had the similar issue?

Nah, I wouldn't go digging into the whole fuel system just yet. I'd focus on the fuel pump first. Check the connector that plugs directly into the fuel pump. See if it's loose, corroded, or if any of the wires are damaged. Honestly, I'd recommend getting it checked out by a workshop. These modern cars are so complicated, and messing with the fuel system can be risky. It's probably just the fuel pump as said, but they will check the cables and all connections before replacing it anyway.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I appreciate the insight. I will check the connections, but it's probably beyond my capabilities. I've already made an appointment to get it checked at the shop; they said it'll be about 95€. Hopefully, it's just a loose wire like you suggested. I will post what the shop finds in case anyone else runs into this problem. The issue was as suggested a cable or plug connection!
