Elgrand Bumper Antenna Fault

I have a 2001 Nissan Elgrand diesel, and something is going on with what I think is the bumper antenna. Mileage is at 76810 km. I'm getting an error, the remote unlocking/locking is busted, and the van won't start unless the key is physically in the ignition. I think it's a dodgy cable or plug connection somewhere in the antenna system. Anyone seen this before?

Summary of the thread

The 2001 Nissan Elgrand diesel is experiencing issues with the bumper antenna, leading to remote unlocking/locking failure and the necessity of using the key physically in the ignition to start the vehicle. The suspected cause is a faulty cable or plug connection within the antenna system. A similar issue in another vehicle was due to corrosion, suggesting a potential electrical problem affecting the immobilizer. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle inspected at a workshop, where it was confirmed to be a corroded connection in the bumper antenna wiring, which was then repaired.

That sounds rough! I had something similar happen with my old Renault Scenic, though it wasn't exactly the same. The radio reception went haywire, and the keyless entry was acting up too. Did you check the antenna mount itself? On my Scenic, it was corroded, causing all sorts of weird electrical issues. Is the Elgrand's antenna in the bumper?

The Elgrand's antenna is built right into the bumper, which is why I suspect it. With your Scenic, was it just the corrosion on the mount, or did you have to replace the whole antenna unit as well? And did your symptoms also prevent you from starting the car? That's the bit that's got me scratching my head.

On my Scenic, the corrosion was so bad it had messed up the antenna itself, so I had to replace the whole thing. Cost a fortune! But the starting issue? Nope, didn't have that. Given you're getting that, plus the other issues, it really does sound like a deeper electrical problem related to the antenna system, maybe messing with the immobilizer. I'd bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. They'll have the gear to diagnose it properly.

Thanks for the input! I was hoping to avoid the workshop, but it sounds like it's the only real option. You were spot on; took it in, and it was a corroded connection in the bumper antenna wiring, just like you suspected. 95€ later, and it's all sorted. Cheers for the help!
