Thanks for the quick response! I've had a quick look around the brake lines and calipers but honestly, it's hard to tell with all the undercarriage protection. I didn't see any obvious puddles, but I'll take another look with a better light. Regarding the fluid itself, it's not crystal clear but it's not completely black either. What would really dark fluid indicate?

Really dark fluid suggests it's contaminated with moisture and debris, reducing its effectiveness. Given the age and mileage, plus your concerns about leaks and the pedal feel, a thorough inspection of the entire hydraulic brake system is advisable. I'd recommend a shop pressure test the system to pinpoint any leaks. You'll probably need a fluid replacement and brake service soon. It's best to get it professionally checked.

Thanks, that confirms my fears. I'll book it in at a workshop for a proper inspection and brake service. The worn brakes and fluid replacement cost 480€.

Low brake fluid and spongy pedal feel often go hand in hand. If the fluid is genuinely low, it's going somewhere. Are you seeing any evidence of leaks around the brake lines, master cylinder, or at the calipers themselves? Check for dampness or fluid stains. Before topping up, consider where the fluid has gone. Just topping up might mask a more serious problem. What does the fluid look like? Is it clean, or dark and murky?
