Engine control light and loss of power in Polo Diesel 2009: Suspected EGR valve malfunction

Hi guys, I have a problem with my 2009 Polo Diesel with 178,654 km mileage. The check engine light comes on all the time, the engine stops by itself and loses power. When idling, the car shakes and it smells strongly of exhaust. I suspect there may be problems with the EGR valve (malfunction). Has anyone ever had similar symptoms and can tell me how it was at the mechanic? After my last visit there, I have become rather skeptical. Thanks in advance for your help!

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Polo Diesel with 178,654 km is experiencing issues such as the check engine light turning on, engine stalling, power loss, shaking when idling, and a strong exhaust smell. These symptoms suggest a potential malfunction of the EGR valve. A similar case with a Passat 2012 diesel was resolved by replacing the faulty EGR valve, which restored smooth engine performance. It is recommended to have the EGR valve checked and possibly replaced to address these issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I can understand you very well. I had exactly the same problems with my Passat 2012 diesel last year. Check engine light, engine performance and that crazy exhaust smell. Took my car to my garage at the time and they confirmed that the EGR valve was faulty and stuck. It had to be replaced. I have to say it was a serious case, but once the valve was replaced, the car ran smoothly and peacefully again. Although it was quite an effort, the result was worth it. You probably have exactly the same problem. It's best to have it checked. Keep your fingers crossed that it gets solved quickly.

Hey, thanks for your input! I'm reassured that it was ultimately just the EGR valve and that your car ran smoothly again afterwards. Do you remember roughly how much the whole thing cost back then? And has your car had any further problems since then or was that really the solution? Cheers!

Sure, no problem! In the end, this fun with the EGR valve actually cost me €355. But, hey, let's be honest, since the mechanic fixed the thing, the car has been running like a dream. No loss of power, no shuddering feeling at idle and, above all, no more off-putting exhaust smell. It really worked wonders to fix this EGR valve. Since then I have had no further problems with the car. So, just get it checked, it could be totally worth it. Cheers!

Thanks, buddy! That sounds like an expensive but necessary fix. It's great to hear that your car has been running smoothly since then. I'll take my Polo Diesel to the garage and see what they say. Hopefully it's just the EGR valve. I really appreciate your help and support. I will be careful and hope all will be well. Cheers!

Hi, I have an Audi S6 3.2 FSI. The engine almost starts but doesn't actually start and smells like fuel. There's an error in the fault memory that might make sense. P048100 Camshaft adjuster bank 2, cylinder 4, implausible signal. Please help, thanks.

Start by checking the camshaft position sensor for bank 2, as a faulty sensor can cause starting issues and fuel smell. Ensure the wiring and connections are secure and not damaged. If the sensor seems fine, it might be worth inspecting the camshaft adjuster itself for any mechanical issues. Let me know how it goes or if you have further questions!
