Engine control light illuminated: Peugeot Boxer 2017 with high fuel consumption and drop in performance

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my 2017 Peugeot Boxer, diesel, which has run just 58,837 km. The check engine light is on, the power is dropping, the fuel consumption is too high, the exhaust smells unhealthy and it chugs at idle. I think it could be the engine running rough. Have any of you experienced this before and would you please tell me about your experience at the mechanic? My last experience there was anything but great. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Peugeot Boxer is experiencing issues with the engine control light being on, high fuel consumption, a drop in performance, unhealthy exhaust smell, and chugging at idle. A similar problem was resolved in another vehicle by replacing porous rubber hoses, which were causing air leakage and rough engine running. The suggested solution is to inspect and potentially replace these hoses, as it could be a cost-effective fix.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hello, you've got a real problem on your hands. I had something similar with my 2014 Peugeot Expert. Unfortunately, it sounds a lot like air leakage to me, as your car shows the same symptoms as mine did back then. In my case, it was porous rubber hoses that made my engine run rough. The crankcase ventilation was fine. After the hoses were replaced, my Expert ran like a champ again. But before you panic, get it checked first. It could be many things, but if it's the same, at least it's not a catastrophic problem. Good luck, colleague!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply and the helpful information! It seems that my Boxer has something similar to your former Expert... Porous rubber hoses don't sound like an arm and a leg at first. Do you happen to remember what you left in the workshop to change the hoses? And did you have any follow-up problems afterwards, or was it really quiet then? Looking forward to your feedback! Thank you and good luck!

Hey, you're welcome - we car fans have to stick together, don't we? In answer to your question: When I took the old Expert to the garage back then, the whole thing cost me a whopping €235. That included replacing the porous rubber hoses and inspecting the crankcase ventilation. It wasn't exactly a penny, but it's still better than a completely new engine, isn't it? But the best thing is: After the workshop visit, the problem with the rough engine running was blown away. No more chugging, no more stench, no more excessive fuel consumption. So don't worry, I think your boxer will soon be running smoothly again. Good luck at the workshop and let me know how it goes! See you then,

Hey, wow, 235€ really seems like a fair price if all your worries are history afterwards! I'm really hoping that my Boxer will be the same. Thanks for your advice and encouragement. I'll let you know as soon as I hear from the workshop! Until then,
