Eon engine knocking loss of power

Hi, I've got a 2014 Hyundai Eon, gasoline engine, and lately it's been acting up. Got about 90k km on it. Seems like there's some serious knocking going on in the engine, especially when I try to accelerate. I've also noticed a loss of power and the car jerks a bit. Plus, sometimes I see a bit of smoke coming out when I really step on it. The check engine light came on too, so I scanned it and there was an error code stored. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Hyundai Eon with 90,000 km is experiencing engine knocking, loss of power, and occasional smoke, with the check engine light on. The knocking occurs mainly when the engine is warm and under load. Possible causes include combustion chamber deposits and old spark plugs. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle diagnosed by a mechanic, who can clean the combustion chamber, adjust ignition timing, and replace spark plugs, which resolved the issue.

That doesn't sound good. Could be a few things, but the knocking, smoke, and error code definitely point toward something serious. Is the knocking sound constant, or only when the engine is warm? Have you checked your oil level recently? Low oil can cause knocking. Also, when was the last time you had a proper engine tune-up, including spark plugs?

The knocking is mostly when the engine is warm and under load, like going up a hill. I checked the oil last week and it seemed okay. I haven't done a full tune-up in ages, just regular oil changes and filter replacements. Could old spark plugs really cause all these problems?

Yeah, the warm engine knock makes me think it could be pre-ignition from deposits in the combustion chamber. Old plugs could contribute, but the smoke plus the error code… I'd take it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed. Running it like that could cause more damage. A good mechanic can check the ignition timing etc.

Thanks for the advice! Took it to the shop like you said. Turns out you were right – combustion chamber deposits. They cleaned everything out, adjusted the ignition timing, and replaced the spark plugs while they were at it. Cost me about 425€. Running smoothly now!
