Eon Overheating Air Flap

My 2011 Hyundai Eon (gasoline engine, 156055 km) has a check engine light and is overheating. A mechanic says it's an active air flap fault and quoted 590€. Anyone else experience this with their Eon? Worried about engine damage.

Summary of the thread

A 2011 Hyundai Eon owner experienced a check engine light and overheating, attributed to an active air flap fault. The issue was linked to the air intake system affecting the engine's cooling, causing the engine to overheat. A mechanic suggested replacing the faulty electromechanism for the active air flap, which resolved the problem, turning off the check engine light and stopping the overheating.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Whoa, overheating is never good! I had something vaguely similar with my Eon, though it wasn't exactly the same. My check engine light was on, and the car felt sluggish. Turns out, it was something to do with the air intake system messing with the cooling. Is your car burning more fuel than usual, kinda like when you're trying to run with a blocked nose? Could be a similar issue with that active air flap thingy. Does the diagnostic scan specifically mention the air intake or cooling system at all?

Thanks! I haven't closely monitored fuel consumption. The diagnostic report mentioned the 'active air flap.' I'm not sure how the air intake system relates to the cooling system. Are they linked? How did the air intake issue affect your cooling system?

Yeah, the air intake and cooling are definitely linked! Think of it like this: the engine needs air to breathe, right? If the air flow is messed up, the engine has to work harder, which creates more heat. The cooling system then struggles to keep up. In my case, the flap wasn't opening properly and I ended up going to the workshop. They spotted it right away and replaced the faulty mechanism. Given that you're also dealing with overheating, I'd seriously consider taking it back to the mechanic for a proper look.

Thanks so much for the advice! Your explanation about the link between the air intake and cooling system was helpful. I decided to proceed with the repair. Replacing the defective electromechanism for the active air flap seems to have resolved the issue. The check engine light is now off, and the engine is no longer overheating. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience. It made a huge difference!
