Epica Fuel Pump Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2007 Chevrolet Epica diesel was experiencing unreliable starting, stalling at idle, rough running, increased fuel consumption, and an illuminated check engine light, suggesting a potential fuel pump issue. Possible causes included a faulty fuel pump, relay, wiring, or a clogged fuel filter. Suggested solutions involved checking the fuel pump relay, wiring connections, and fuel pressure, with a recommendation to consult a mechanic if these checks did not resolve the issue. Ultimately, a mechanic confirmed a fuel pump problem, and after repair, the car ran smoothly.

I haven't checked fuel pressure at the rail. How hard is that, and what readings should I look for? Also, where is the fuel pump relay and how do I test it? I'll get the error code now.

For fuel pressure, you need a gauge connected to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. The pressure spec is in your manual, but it's usually 40-60 PSI. Low pressure supports a fuel pump issue. The relay is often in the under-hood fuse box. Check your manual. Swap it with an identical relay (horn, etc.) to see if the problem goes away, or use a multimeter to check for continuity and voltage. Given the symptoms, if the relay and filter are okay, take it to a workshop before you cause more damage.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't do all the tests, but your insights pointed to a defective cable or plug connection. My mechanic confirmed the fuel pump issue. The repair was 95€, and the car runs smoothly now. Your guidance helped a lot.

Those symptoms point to a fuel delivery issue, and the fuel pump is a suspect. The error code would help. Did you read it with an OBD2 scanner? Good you checked the lines. Before replacing the pump, check the fuel pump relay and wiring. A loose connection could cause this. Also, check the fuel filter; a clogged filter can strain the pump.
