Erratic Gear Shifting and Engine Warning in 2010 Mazda Bongo at 286k km

Hey! I've been having some hair-pulling issues with my 2010 Bongo. Ever since it hit 286k km, the check engine light's been on and the darned thing's been shifting gears like a drunk DJ. I could swear the problem's with the transmission selector lever. Had a nasty run-in with a mechanic last time, left me skeptical! Just trying to avoid another potential rip-off and gain some insights. Anyone here had similar experiences with their Bongo or at the mechanic's? Any advice's appreciated! Cheers.

Hey there, looks like we've got a similar situation on our hands! I got a 2013 Mazda Bongo, and had the exact same trouble with erratic transmission and that annoying check engine light. After limping into the garage, they diagnosed it as being a problem with the cable connection on the selector lever. Turns out, the cable was damaged and was causing some kind of 'lost in translation' issue between the lever and the actual mechanism. Just like yours, my selector lever was giving off a drunk DJ vibe, couldn't make up its mind where it wanted to stick. No major work had to be done to fix the issue though, which was a relief. They just had to replace the damaged cable and everything was copacetic. It felt like getting a new lease of life, I tell ya! So my advice? Get the selector lever checked out ASAP. It might just be a damaged cable messing with your sanity. Good luck!

Hey there, thanks so much for the advice! Your experience with the erratic transmission and the stubborn check engine light sure does sound familiar. Seems we both got the same spinning-DJ of a selector! It's comforting to know that it might just be a damaged cable. Out of curiosity, do you remember around how much you had to shell out to replace that pesky cable? I'm just trying to get a rough idea of what's lying ahead for my wallet. And, any other problems that cropped up afterward, or has it been smooth rides all the way since? Cheers!

Hey, no problem at all, glad to help a fellow Bongo owner! As for your question, I remember the cost for sorting out that wayward cable was about 365.00 €. Honestly, felt like money well spent considering the peace of mind it's given me since. As for any further issues, well, it's been all smooth driving since I got the cable replaced! Once they fixed the connection to the transmission selector lever, my little Mazda's been purring like a kitten. Finally saying goodbye to that check engine light has been a real treat, let me tell ya! Good luck with your repair! I'm sure you'll be back on the road, trouble-free, in no time.

Hey! I genuinely appreciate your swift response and valuable insight! It sounds like getting the cable replaced took a huge weight off your shoulders. €365.0 sounds a bit steep but if it gets the job done and keeps things smooth, I'm all for it. I'm definitely looking forward to kissing that stubborn engine light goodbye and getting my Bongo back on the best gear-track. Best to shell out a few Euro now rather than deal with a kick in the gearbox later, huh? Thanks again, and take care! Safe and smooth cruising to you. Cheers!
