Erratic gearshift and ABS warning light on Benz GLS 2016: suspected transfer case emergency running control
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Benz GLS owner is experiencing erratic gearshifts, an ABS warning light, and a whining or grinding noise, suspecting the transfer case emergency running control as the cause. Another Benz owner with similar issues found that a faulty control unit was responsible and resolved the problem by replacing it. The suggested solution is to have the control unit checked and possibly replaced to prevent further damage and restore the vehicle's performance.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply and total help. It seems like I'm struggling with the ECU as well. Do you mind if I ask what you paid for it? I just want to have a rough idea of my costs before I head to the garage. And by the way, since you replaced the ECU, have you had any other problems or anything else come up afterwards? Best regards and thanks again!

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for. So, I paid €525 for the broken control unit. Some might say it's a bit expensive, but after that my car ran like a new car again. And no, after replacing the control unit, there were no further problems. The warning lights were all gone and the jerking of the gearbox also stopped. In particular, this annoying "transfer case emergency control active" problem was history. So, from my point of view, it was definitely worth the price. Hope this helps you with your decision. Stay safe and have a good trip! Best regards!

Hey, ah, that's a big help, really. 525 is a bit high, but if it gets the car back to its best condition then it's worth it. It's a bit reassuring to hear that you haven't had any further problems since replacing the ECU. I'm going to take my GLS to the garage first thing tomorrow. I hope that solves my problem as well as it solved yours. Thanks again for the advice and support! I now feel more prepared for the workshop. Best regards and have a safe journey! Best regards.

Hi, these symptoms sound very familiar. I drive a 2013 Benz GLE and recently had similar problems. It was actually the control unit that was faulty. It felt like the transmission wasn't adjusting properly and also my ABS warning light came on. I contacted my garage and the guys replaced the control unit. This was already a serious issue, so my advice is to get it checked as soon as possible to avoid major damage. Don't worry, after that my car ran like clockwork again. I hope this helps and have a good trip! Best regards!
