Erratic running and exhaust odor in Audi A5 diesel - suspected EGR valve defect

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Strong exhaust smell

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey guys, I'm really worried as my 2009 Audi A5 Diesel with 176543 km on the odometer is playing quite a few games with me. The indicator light is constantly on, the engine switches itself off and also runs very erratically. In addition, there is a strong smell of exhaust fumes and an annoying jerking when idling. My suspicion lies with the EGR valve, as I suspect a functional fault in it. Have any of you ever had similar problems and what did the mechanic do? I had a bad experience last time and don't want to fall into the same trap again. Thanks for your help!

Hey, had the same problem with my 2012 Audi A6. Check engine light, rough engine, the whole shebang. It was actually the EGR valve that was causing trouble. It's not the end of the world, but it should be done. My mechanic replaced the EGR valve, after which everything was back to normal. So your suspicion could be correct. It's best to have it checked. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Then it really does seem to be the EGR valve... Really annoying, but I'm relieved that it's nothing more serious. Can you remember how much it cost you to replace it? And have there been any complications since then or has everything been running smoothly? Thank you!

Hey, no problem! It cost me €355 to repair the EGR valve. It was a while ago, but I remember that much. And since then, everything has been running like clockwork! Since I've been to the mechanic and had the EGR valve repaired, there have been no further difficulties or complications. So I'm pretty happy. Hope that helps you!

Great, that definitely helps me, thank you! 355 euros doesn't sound that great at first, but if there are no further problems afterwards, it's definitely worth it. After all, nobody wants their car to suddenly burst into flames, do they? I'll go to the mechanic tomorrow and have the EGR valve checked. Thanks again for your help and I'll let you know how it goes!
