ES Active Air Flap Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Lexus ES hybrid owner experienced a check engine light and high engine temperature, indicating a potential overheating issue. A diagnostic scan revealed a fault code related to the active air flap system, specifically an electromechanical problem. Another owner with a similar issue suggested that the active grille shutter might be stuck, likely causing the problem. The recommended solution was to have a professional mechanic or dealership diagnose and repair the system, which ultimately resolved the issue after replacing the faulty air flaps.

I suspect it's stuck closed. Was the fault code you saw the same? Do you know what component failed, or how to fix it? I'm trying to understand what to expect at the workshop.

Yes, the fault code was related to the active grille shutter. I didn't try fixing it myself. I'd recommend taking it to a reputable mechanic or the Lexus dealership for proper diagnosis and repair, considering the cooling system. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for confirming the problem and your advice. I visited a shop, and the air flaps were indeed faulty. The replacement cost 590€. The car is running smoothly again!

I had something similar with my ES. Check Engine light and all. The active grille shutter was the culprit. Is yours stuck open or closed?
