Escape Coolant Loss

I have a 2014 Ford Escape with a gasoline engine that's losing coolant, and the check engine light is on. It's got 238437 km on it. I've checked the radiator hoses and cap, and the cooling fan seems okay. Any ideas what could be causing the coolant loss?

Whoa, sounds familiar! I had almost the exact same problem with my Escape. Coolant light, check engine light...the whole shebang. I was constantly topping off the radiator fluid. Have you checked around the water pump area for any signs of leakage?

Could you tell me more about how you checked the water pump? And what should I look for in the coolant, like a specific smell or color?

Okay, so I initially just looked for any wetness or staining around the water pump after the engine had been running. Eventually, I noticed a small drip after the engine cooled down completely. The coolant was a little bit rusty and smelled vaguely sweet, which apparently is pretty common when it’s leaking. Honestly, I tried messing with it myself, but it was a pain to reach. I ended up taking it to a workshop. Cost me around 52€, parts and labor. Seriously, just get it checked.

Thanks for the guidance. Given the complexity, I’ll get a technician to inspect it. I'll post what the diagnosis and fix are. Knowing the expected repair cost helps a lot.
