Escape running rich

My 2002 Ford Escape with a gasoline engine is running way too rich. I'm getting reduced engine power, the check engine light is on, the engine runs rough, my fuel consumption is through the roof, and it even jerks when accelerating. The mileage is at 167319 km. I suspect it's a defective injection valve or injector. Anyone else experience something similar?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my old Opel Astra, though mine was a diesel. Check engine light, rough running, terrible fuel economy... it was a nightmare. Have you checked your air filter? It sounds dumb, but a clogged filter starves the engine of air and can mess with the air-fuel ratio. Also, when was the last time you looked at your catalytic converter?

Thanks for the quick reply! I did check the air filter and it's clean. The catalytic converter is a good point, though. I haven't looked at that in ages. But wouldn't a bad catalytic converter throw a different code? The error code I'm getting points specifically to a rich mixture. Did your Astra throw the same code, or was it something different?

You know what, you're right, my Astra threw a code related to the catalytic converter efficiency. I was hoping it was something simple like the filter. With the 'rich mixture' code and all those symptoms, it really does sound like injectors. Honestly, I'd bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. Diagnosing fuel injection issues can be a real pain without the right tools.

Turns out you were right. Took it to the shop, and it was indeed a defective fuel injector. Had all of them replaced. Cost me 515€, but the car runs like new again. Fuel economy is back to normal, no more jerking, and the check engine light is gone. Thanks for the advice, appreciate it!
