Escape Start Stop Problems

I'm having a head-scratcher with my 2006 Ford Escape. It's got a gasoline engine and only 25767 km on the clock. Recently, the start-stop system has completely given up. The engine cuts out sometimes and there's now a warning light glowing on the speedometer. I plugged in an OBD reader, and it shows an error related to the start-stop system. Could a dead battery cause such weirdness? It feels like the car is trying to be eco-friendly but failing miserably.

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Ford Escape with a gasoline engine is experiencing issues with its start-stop system, leading to engine cutouts and a warning light on the speedometer. The problem may be linked to a heavily discharged or faulty battery, as indicated by error codes from an OBD reader. Replacing the battery is suggested as a likely solution to restore the start-stop functionality and resolve the issue.

Whoa, sounds familiar! I had almost the exact same thing happen with my Escape a while back. That eco mode can be a real pain sometimes. Was the engine stalling happening often, or only under specific conditions? Like, was it just after starting, or maybe when the engine was warm? In my case, a dodgy battery was also the culprit, so you might be onto something there.

Good to know I'm not alone! The engine shuts off more often when the engine is warm, like stoping at traffic lights. Did your Escape also store error codes in the memory because of that? And what did you exactly do to fix the problem? I want to fix it myself.

Yep, tons of error codes! It was like a Christmas tree of warning lights. Honestly, I tried a few things, but in the end, I had to bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. They confirmed that the battery was heavily discharged and causing all sorts of problems with the start-stop. A new battery fixed everything, believe it or not. Seems like the Escape is super sensitive to battery health for that feature to work properly. Probably easier to let them deal with it, unless you're super comfortable with car electrics. Just my two cents.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! It's reassuring to know that the problem is likely just the battery and that a replacement should sort it out. I'll take your advice and get it checked out at a workshop – I wouldn't want to mess anything up. They quoted around 290€, which seems reasonable enough for peace of mind. Cheers!
