Eseries diesel exhaust pressure issue
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Ford Eseries diesel is experiencing reduced engine power, smoke during acceleration, and a strong exhaust smell, with a warning light on the speedometer. The suspected issue is low diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure, potentially caused by a defective exhaust back pressure sensor. After checking sensor readings and consulting with others who had similar issues, it was confirmed that the sensor was faulty. Replacing the sensor resolved the problem, restoring the vehicle's performance.

I did check the sensor readings, and they seem irregular. I wanted to confirm if a faulty sensor is the most likely cause before replacing it. Did your Peugeot show the same symptoms, specifically the loss of power and smoke?

Yep, loss of power and the smell were exactly what I experienced with my Peugeot. The smoke was intermittent, but definitely present. Replacing the sensor fixed it, but I'd still recommend a workshop visit to be 100% sure before spending any money.

Thanks a lot for the information! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. The exhaust back pressure sensor was indeed defective. Replacement and labor cost me 245€. Everything is working perfectly now!

That sounds familiar! I had similar symptoms on my old Peugeot, though it was petrol. It turned out to be the exhaust pressure sensor. Have you checked the sensor readings with a diagnostic tool? If the values are way off, it's a good bet that's your culprit.
