Eseries Hard Start Camshaft Sensor

Hey, hoping someone can help! I've got a 2004 Ford Eseries with a diesel, only 54937 km on the clock, and it's started acting up. It's getting harder to start, sometimes stalls at idle, and the check engine light is on. I'm guessing it's something with the engine control, maybe a sensor failure? Could it be the camshaft sensor, maybe even an engine misfire? Any ideas what to check before I end up at the mercy of a mechanic?

I experienced similar difficulties. Has the encoder wheel on the camshafts been inspected? That component is often the source.

The encoder wheel? Is that a common problem? How would I even check that myself?

Yes, it is not uncommon for your model. Direct inspection necessitates specialized tools. I recommend a qualified workshop to avoid consequential damage.

Thanks so much for the advice! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on. It was the camshaft sensor, encoder wheel defective. Cost me 695€ to get it all sorted, but at least it's running smoothly again. Really appreciate the help!
