Eseries high fuel consumption and stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Ford Eseries is experiencing high fuel consumption, stalling at idle, and a constant check engine light, with a puff of smoke during acceleration. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. Checking for obstructions in the air intake and ensuring the air filter is clean could help, but the symptoms strongly indicate a failing MAF sensor. Replacing the sensor resolved the issues.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the air intake specifically. Where exactly should I be looking for obstructions, and could a dirty air filter contribute to this?

On my Audi, the MAF sensor was right after the air filter box. A dirty filter restricts airflow, which could impact the MAF sensor readings, potentially causing the issues you describe. While it might be worth a shot cleaning or replacing the filter, your symptoms sound more like a failing sensor, especially with the smoke. Probably best to get it checked by a workshop.

Took your advice and had the Ford checked out. Turns out it was indeed the mass air flow sensor. Replacement cost me 365€. Thanks for confirming my suspicions!

That definitely sounds like a potential MAF sensor issue. I had similar symptoms with my older Audi A4 - increased fuel consumption, rough idling, and the check engine light. Have you checked the air intake for any obvious obstructions?
