Eseries steering fault

I've got a concerning steering issue with my 2003 Ford Eseries van with a gasoline engine. The steering has become significantly more difficult, almost like the power steering is failing intermittently. Plus, the steering wheel vibrates and shakes noticeably, especially at lower speeds. The vehicle has about 153418 km on it. I thought it was alignment, but a visual inspection didn't show anything. Could this be a faulty steering angle sensor?

Sounds like the steering angle sensor could be it. I had similar symptoms - increased steering effort, weird vibrations - with my old Opel Astra after I hit a curb. Do you experience a lot of interventions by the traction control?

Thanks, that's helpful. Traction control interventions don't seem to happen much. Could it just be the coding of the steering angle sensor, so the system thinks the alignment is completely off?

Yep, faulty coding can trigger these problems. I'd have the sensor checked at a workshop. They can read out errors and measure the steering angle with respect to the steering wheel. I suspect your sensor has failed.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and they diagnosed a defective steering angle sensor. Apparently, its coding was faulty. The repair, including recalibration, cost 195€. The steering issue is now resolved.
