Espace clutch pedal issue

I'm having a strange issue with my 2006 Renault Espace (gasoline engine). The car thinks the clutch pedal isn't pressed, even when it is! I'm getting an error stored. The gear selection display is useless, cruise control doesn't work, and sometimes the engine refuses to start. I suspect it's the clutch pedal switch, maybe a defective cable or bad plug connection? Anyone experienced something like this? I'm dreading a huge repair bill...

Sounds frustrating. I had a similar problem with my old Opel Astra, though not exactly the same. My cruise control was cutting out randomly, and sometimes it wouldn't start. Turned out to be a faulty sensor on the brake pedal – the car thought I was braking even when I wasn't. Could be a similar safety switch issue with your clutch pedal. Have you checked the connections to the switch? Any visible damage?

Thanks for the reply! I visually inspected the switch and the connector, and I didn't see anything obviously broken or disconnected. Maybe I missed something. When you say 'faulty sensor,' do you mean the sensor itself was broken, or just a bad connection to it? And how did you figure out it was the brake pedal sensor?

Well, in my case, the sensor itself was faulty. The mechanic diagnosed it pretty quickly with some diagnostic tool. Honestly, with all those symptoms you're describing, it really sounds like a faulty safety switch or wiring issue. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop and having them check the clutch pedal switch and its wiring with proper equipment. It's probably a simple fix, but chasing electrical gremlins can be a nightmare.

You were right! Took it to the shop, and they confirmed it was the clutch pedal switch. Apparently, the cable was defective. They replaced the switch, and everything is working perfectly now. Total cost was 95€, which is way better than I feared. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
