Engine knocking? No. Spark plugs? Diesel... Timing belt? Unknown. How do I pinpoint the 'simpler cause'?

My apologies; I overlooked the diesel engine detail regarding the spark plugs. Given the unknown timing belt history and absence of engine knocking, I would strongly suggest a comprehensive diagnostic check at a reputable workshop. They possess the tools to assess the cylinder pressures accurately and identify the primary fault triggering the consequential error. Continuing to drive it without a proper diagnosis could exacerbate the underlying problem.

Thanks! You nailed it. Took it in, and it turned out to be a faulty sensor causing all the chaos. The diagnostic check was spot on. Repair cost: 0€!

A fluctuating cylinder pressure on your 2007 Renault Espace diesel could stem from a variety of issues. While it may be a consequential error, we must first consider the likely culprits. Have you noticed any engine knocking or unusual noises? When was the timing belt last changed? It's also worth checking the condition of your spark plugs, though that's less probable with a diesel. Piston rings and crankshaft issues can also contribute, but are less likely than a simpler cause.
