The grinding seems worse in the lower gears, especially when accelerating from a stop. And yes, fuel consumption has definitely gone up in the last few weeks. Was your issue definitely the torque converter?

Given those symptoms, it strongly points to the torque converter lock-up clutch. I'd advise getting it checked by a reputable workshop as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the transmission.

Thanks for confirming my fears! I took it to the workshop today, and you were spot on – it's a defective torque converter. The repair is going to set me back 2120€ Ouch! At least now I know what's going on. Thanks again for the help!

I had similar symptoms with my Espace. Is the grinding noise consistent across all gears or more noticeable in specific ones? Also, did you notice any changes in fuel consumption?
