Espace transfer case limp mode
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Renault Espace with 206,883 km is experiencing issues with the transfer case going into limp mode, causing gearbox slipping and unclean shifts. The problem may be linked to faults in the ABS system, which can lead to powertrain malfunctions. A similar case was resolved by addressing a cascading failure from the ABS module affecting the transfer case, and it is advised to have the vehicle checked by a workshop to prevent further damage.

Yes, that's exactly how it feels, like the torque converter isn't locking! And now that you mention it, the gear selector feels a bit off too. What did you end up doing to fix it?

Yep, sounds like the same problem. Turned out to be a cascading failure from the ABS module messing with the transfer case. Honestly, I'd get it to a workshop ASAP. You don't want to risk further damage by driving it in limp home mode.

Thanks so much for the insight! It's good to know I'm not completely off base with my suspicions. I booked it in with a local workshop, and you were spot on; it all stemmed from the ABS, but thankfully, it was all covered, and I didn't have to pay anything!

Sounds familiar! I had something similar happen with my Espace. Was it like the torque converter wasn't locking up properly? Was it also throwing up any warnings related to the gear selector?
