I had a similar issue with my Essentia a while back. Rough idle and jerking acceleration sound very familiar. Did you notice any unusual noises or smells? Have you checked for any obvious exhaust leaks? That was my problem.

Exhaust leaks? Interesting. I haven't really checked that closely. Where exactly should I be looking for the leak? Is it something I could potentially fix myself, or am I better off taking it to a workshop?

In my case, the leak was near one of the joints in the exhaust system. Honestly, unless you have experience with exhaust repairs, I would recommend taking it to a professional. I messed around with it for an afternoon, and eventually just made it worse. A workshop will be able to properly diagnose and fix the issue. It's better to be safe than sorry with exhaust fumes. After some research this appears to be quite the common issue.
