Estima Crankshaft Sensor Issue

My 2013 Toyota Estima hybrid's check engine light keeps popping on, and the car feels sluggish, like it's lost power. Acceleration is terrible, and I'm sure I'm burning more fuel. My mechanic pulled a code related to the crankshaft to camshaft reference value – something about them not being in sync. He suspects a defective crankshaft sensor. Has anyone else run into this?

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Toyota Estima hybrid experienced a check engine light, sluggish performance, and increased fuel consumption. The mechanic identified a synchronization issue between the crankshaft and camshaft, suspecting a defective crankshaft sensor. The problem was resolved by replacing the crankshaft sensor and resetting the car's computer, restoring the vehicle's performance.

I had something similar happen with my Estima. When the crankshaft and camshaft aren't properly synchronized, it can cause issues. The engine relies on those sensors to know the position of the pistons and valves, and if that signal is off, the engine's timing goes out of whack. Were you experiencing any misfires, or rough idling before the check engine light came on?

Thanks for the quick reply! No, I didn't notice any misfires or rough idling. It mostly just felt like a loss of power and the engine light. Is the crankshaft sensor difficult to replace? Any idea what I should be looking at in terms of repair costs?

Okay, that's good it wasn't misfiring. Regarding the crankshaft sensor replacement itself, it's not necessarily the most complex job mechanically, but getting to it can be a pain depending on its location. Also, the car's computer will likely need to be reset, so that the check engine light turns off, and that the new sensor signal is recognized. Honestly, if you're not super comfortable with car repairs, I'd suggest taking it to a reputable workshop. I paid around 340€ for mine, parts and labor included. At least they can diagnose it properly and give you an exact quote.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a different workshop, and you were spot on – it was indeed the crankshaft sensor. They replaced it, reset the computer, and the Estima is running like a dream again. Cost me about 340€, just like you said. Appreciate the help!
