Thanks! Is 'throttle cleaning spray' something I can do myself, or am I risking making things worse? Also, if it is the accelerator pedal module, is that something a novice can tackle, or is it best left to the professionals? Roughly how much did the repairs cost you?

Cleaning the throttle body can be a DIY job, but if you're not confident, I wouldn't risk it. As for the pedal module, I really wouldn't advise messing with that yourself. I ended up taking my Megane to a workshop, they replaced a faulty sensor and cleaned the throttle. Cost me around 180£ back then. Best bet is to get it properly diagnosed!

Okay, thanks! Sounds like a trip to the mechanic is in order. I appreciate the insight – at least now I have a better idea of what to expect. I got the car back, it was indeed the accelerator pedal module, cost me 205€. All good now!

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my old Renault Megane. Symptoms were almost identical – terrible fuel economy and struggling to start. I'd suggest checking for dirt or grime around the throttle body, maybe even try a throttle cleaning spray. But honestly, it could be a sensor issue messing with the engine idle.
