Everest transmission issues

Alright, I'm officially stumped. My 2021 Ford Everest, diesel engine, is throwing a fit. Engine warning light came on, and then the transmission warning light joined the party. It's got 245748 km on the clock. Now, it's stuck in what feels like emergency mode, shifts are clunky, and sometimes it even feels like it's slipping. Oh, and a delightful grinding noise on occasion. I've checked the basics, but what gives?

Hmm, sounds rough. Slipping and grinding aren't exactly good news. Have you noticed if it's worse when the engine's cold or hot? And you said you checked the basics, but did you specifically check the transmission fluid level? That's usually the first place to look when automatics start acting up. Could be something simple, but those symptoms could also point to something more serious with the transmission itself.

Good shout about the fluid level. No, I haven't checked the gearbox oil level, I keep forgetting this exists as a serviceable item...do you think this could genuinely cause all these symptoms, especially the grinding and going into emergency mode?

Okay, so low gearbox oil is a likely cause, and can produce all your symptoms. The grinding noise is likely to be due to the lack of lubrication between the gears and other parts. The emergency mode is a safety measure that the car takes to protect the transmission from further damage. Essentially, if the oil level is low, then the oil temperature sensor might report low values, causing all the error codes. In my opinion, your best bet would be to go to your local workshop and have them check the oil level. If it's low, they can top it up and see if that resolves the issue. If not, they can investigate further. But it's definitely worth checking the oil level first. It might cost you about 365€.

Thanks for the advice! Turns out you were spot on about the oil level. Took it to a shop, they topped it up, and all the issues vanished. They said the transmission oil temperature sensor was faulty due to the low level. Cost me 365€ in total. Appreciate the help!
