Excursion fuel tank ventilation leak
Summary of the thread
The 2002 Ford Excursion was experiencing a check engine light and stalling issues, suspected to be due to a fuel tank ventilation system leak. Possible causes included a defective charcoal canister or issues within the EVAP system, such as the purge valve solenoid. A smoke test was suggested to identify leaks. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by replacing the defective charcoal canister, restoring proper engine function and emission control.

Smoke testing, eh? Interesting. Never done that myself. And yes, codes are pointing to EVAP, specifically leak detection. Charcoal canister seems the most likely culprit, but what about the purge valve solenoid? That could cause a similar headache, right?

Yeah, the purge valve could definitely be playing a role. In my case, with the Saab, it turned out to be a cracked charcoal canister. Honestly, at this point, unless you have the equipment and know-how, I'd suggest taking it to a trustworthy workshop. Save yourself the headache and potential for making things worse.

You're probably right. Bit the bullet and took it in. Turns out the activated charcoal filter was indeed defective. New one installed, leak sorted, and the engine is running smooth as butter again. Emission control restored. Cost me 275€, but well worth it for the peace of mind. Thanks for the nudge!

I had a similar issue with my old Saab 9-5 Aero. Check engine light, occasional stalling... Drove me nuts. Is it throwing any specific codes related to the EVAP system? Have you tried smoke testing the system for leaks?
