Excursion headlight range control issue

I've got a 2003 Ford Excursion with the diesel engine and I'm running into a weird problem with the headlights. The error memory has flagged something, and the warning light is on in the speedometer, related to the headlight range control. The low beams are either pointing way too low or too high. I'm guessing it's a defective servomotor in the headlight, but wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with this before I shell out 1040€.

Wow, that sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 Series a few years back. It started with the adaptive headlight system throwing errors. By 'adaptive' I mean the lights turn slightly when you steer the car. In my case, it was also related to the light intensity and auto-leveling system. Have you checked the electrical connectors to the headlight assembly? Sometimes, a loose or corroded connector can cause all sorts of weird issues with the range control and beam adjustment.

Good call on the connectors. I'll give them a look. When you say 'similar issue', did yours also involve the lights pointing in the wrong direction or was it just the warning light?

Okay, so with my BMW, the lights were actually pointing slightly downwards all the time, regardless of the road conditions. That's why I was skeptical. I think you might need professional help, so I ended up taking it to a workshop because the repair was very complex. But checking those connectors as you mentioned is the right thing to do!

Thanks for the insight. It turned out to be exactly what I suspected: a defective servomotor. Shop confirmed it and replaced the unit. Painful 1040€ later, everything's back to normal.
