Excursion Transmission Issues

Hey, I'm having a weird problem with my 2004 Ford Excursion diesel. It has about 136000 km on it. The transmission is acting up – the paddle shifters don't work at all, the gearbox slips and shifts really rough, and there's this grinding noise sometimes when it changes gears. The paddle shifters are also super slow to respond, and the gearbox keeps going into emergency mode. I plugged it into a reader and it's throwing an error. Any ideas?

Sounds like it could be a few things. Have you checked the transmission fluid level? When was the last time the fluid and filter were changed?

Fluid level seems okay, but honestly, I can't remember the last time I changed the fluid or filter. Could a simple fluid change really cause all these issues, or is it something more serious, like the control unit?

A fluid change might help, but the symptoms you describe, especially the error code and emergency mode, suggest it's more than just old fluid. There is a possibility that the transmission control unit could be defective.

Thanks for the insight. I'll take it to a workshop to have them diagnose the control unit. They suspect the ECU might be broken and will cost around 1000€ to replace. Appreciate the help!
