Excursion Transmission Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Ford Excursion diesel is experiencing transmission issues, including non-functional paddle shifters, rough and slipping gear shifts, grinding noises, and frequent activation of emergency mode. These symptoms, along with an error code, suggest potential problems beyond just old transmission fluid, possibly involving a defective transmission control unit. A workshop diagnosis is recommended to confirm if the control unit or ECU is the root cause.

Fluid level seems okay, but honestly, I can't remember the last time I changed the fluid or filter. Could a simple fluid change really cause all these issues, or is it something more serious, like the control unit?

A fluid change might help, but the symptoms you describe, especially the error code and emergency mode, suggest it's more than just old fluid. There is a possibility that the transmission control unit could be defective.

Thanks for the insight. I'll take it to a workshop to have them diagnose the control unit. They suspect the ECU might be broken and will cost around 1000€ to replace. Appreciate the help!

Sounds like it could be a few things. Have you checked the transmission fluid level? When was the last time the fluid and filter were changed?
