Expedition Overheating Speed Sensor
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Ford Expedition is experiencing overheating and a check engine light issue. The initial suspicion is a problem with the radiator fan or thermal switch. A suggestion is made to check the speed sensor, as a defective one can prevent the fan motor from activating properly. After consulting a mechanic, it is confirmed that the speed sensor was the cause, and it was repaired.

Interesting, I wouldn't have thought of that. Where is the speed sensor located, and is it hard to replace? Is there a way I can rule out the fan blade?

It's near the wheel hub, but honestly, diagnosing electrical issues can be tricky. Given the overheating, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop.

Thanks! I took your advice and had a mechanic look at it. Turns out it was indeed the speed sensor. Cost me about 250€ to get it fixed. Appreciate the help!

I had a similar problem with my Expedition some time ago. Check the speed sensor; a defective one can cause the fan motor not to kick in when it should.
