Explorer AC failure

My 2000 Ford Explorer with a gasoline engine is giving me fits. The AC is totally dead. It doesn't switch on, and a warning light popped up. I pulled the codes and found an error stored related to the AC. Any thoughts? It’s barely cooled the last few weeks, now nothing.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with your Ford Explorer. I had a similar problem with my 2012 Citroen C4 a few years ago. It exhibited very similar symptoms. Before the AC completely gave out, did you notice any strange noises coming from the compressor, or any fluctuations in cooling performance?

Thanks for the reply! Now that you mention it, there WAS a slight squealing noise sometimes, and the cooling was definitely weaker than usual lately. Was it the AC control unit that did you in too, or something else entirely?

The diagnosis pointed to a defective air conditioning control unit, which led to compressor failure on my Citroen C4. Given your symptoms, including the error code and squealing noise, the problem with your Explorer is remarkably similar. I suggest taking it to a qualified workshop for a proper diagnosis. Better to catch it early and prevent further damage.

You were spot on! Took it to my shop, and after some testing, the AC control unit was indeed the culprit, just like your Citroen! New compressor and control unit later, and it's blowing ice cold again, but ouch, 980€ lighter in the wallet. Thanks for sharing your experience; it helped a lot!
