I haven't inspected the fuel injectors directly, but my mechanic voiced a similar concern regarding potential clogging. I regularly use standard grade gasoline; would the fuel grade contribute to such issues?

The fuel grade could be a contributing factor, but I think the root cause is a dirty injection valve. I visited a workshop because diagnosis and injector cleaning are more complex than I could handle. The repair cost was around 515€. I recommend seeking professional assistance.

I also drive an Explorer. The issues you describe sound familiar to a problem I encountered some time ago. The symptoms were similar: poor starting, increased fuel consumption, and a performance drop. Have you checked the condition of your fuel injectors? Clogged injectors can significantly hamper engine performance.
