Failing Radiator Fan Causes Magnum Engine to Overheat

Hi all, my engine keeps overheating and the check engine light just started flashing. I noticed the car radiator fan isnt spinning properly and makes an odd fan noise when running. My mechanic previously did some work on the cooling system but now Im worried the fan blade might be failing. Has anyone dealt with similar car overheating issues on their Magnum? Running a 2008 Dodge Magnum with gas engine at 122868km. Any tips on what to check or mechanic recommendations would be great. Want to make sure Im not getting ripped off this time around.

Had similar symptoms on my 2005 Dodge Charger, engine overheating combined with fan noise issues. The car radiator fan assembly needed replacement since the fan motor was failing, causing inconsistent cooling and that distinctive grinding sound during operation. The temperature control problems started slowly but got serious fast. Engine cooling became very inconsistent, especially in slow traffic. The fan would spin erratically and make concerning noises, much like what you describe. When the engine temperature rises and the fan isnt working properly, it can lead to severe engine damage. This isnt a repair to postpone. In my case, the entire cooling fan assembly, including the motor and control module, needed replacement. The issue also damaged part of the wiring harness. Suggest checking: Fan motor resistance, Cooling system pressure, Thermostat operation, Engine coolant level, Radiator for blockages Get it inspected soon. While not the most expensive repair, leaving it unfixed risks major engine damage from overheating.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Charger. That sounds exactly like what Im dealing with on my Magnum, same erratic fan behavior and overheating issues. Just wondering, how much did the fan assembly replacement end up costing you? Have you had any other cooling system problems since getting it fixed? Im hoping to avoid any further issues once I get this sorted out.

Good news since having the repair done on my Charger. The thermal switch and speed sensor were causing the fan motor issues, and after spending 250€ on the repair, the car is running perfectly. The mechanic found the speed sensor was completely defective, causing the erratic fan behavior and temperature control problems. No cooling system problems since the fix. The radiator fan now kicks in exactly when needed and maintains proper engine temperature, even in heavy traffic. The grinding noise is completely gone, and the check engine light hasnt returned. Make sure your mechanic thoroughly tests the fan motor and all related components. Sometimes what seems like a failing fan blade can actually be sensor-related. The car overheating symptoms cleared up immediately after the repair, proving it was definitely the root cause. The price you end up paying might vary based on parts needed, but fixing it properly the first time prevents more expensive repairs down the road.

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update everyone. Turned out the fan motor was shot, plus the thermal switch needed replacement. Total bill came to 375€ but worth every cent since the car is running perfectly now. The mechanic showed me the old fan motor, it was completely worn out and causing that weird grinding noise. They also found some damaged wiring near the car radiator that needed fixing. Pretty glad I brought it in when I did. No more car overheating issues even in stop-and-go traffic. The fan blade spins smoothly now and the temperature gauge stays right where it should. Check engine light is gone too. Much better experience with this mechanic, they took the time to explain everything and even showed me the faulty parts. Definitely keeping them for future repairs.
