Fiat 124 Undervoltage Error

I've got a 2019 Fiat 124, gasoline engine, and lately it's been acting up. Got almost 200k kilometers on it (193773 km to be exact). The main problem is it throws an undervoltage error. It starts poorly, some systems are failing randomly, the lights flicker, and the battery feels weak when I try to start it. I'm guessing the battery is the issue, maybe heavily discharged or just plain defective? Anyone else run into this?

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Fiat 124 with nearly 200,000 kilometers is experiencing an undervoltage error, leading to poor starting, random system failures, flickering lights, and a weak battery. The issue may stem from a heavily discharged or defective battery, but other potential causes include corroded or loose battery terminals and a malfunctioning alternator. Suggested solutions include checking the battery terminals for corrosion, ensuring connections are secure, and verifying the alternator's output with a multimeter. If these checks don't resolve the issue, consulting a qualified automotive technician is recommended for a comprehensive diagnosis.

I had a similar experience with my 124. The undervoltage issue can manifest in various ways, as you've described. Before condemning the battery, I would recommend a thorough diagnostic process. Have you checked the battery terminals for corrosion or loose connections? Also, it would be prudent to examine the alternator's output to ensure it is charging the battery correctly. A weak alternator can lead to a chronically undercharged battery, which would explain the symptoms you're observing.

Okay, thanks for the info. How would I go about checking the alternator output? What kind of voltage should I be seeing there?

Verifying the alternator output requires a multimeter. With the engine running, you should observe a voltage reading between 13.8 and 14.4 volts at the battery terminals. Readings outside this range indicate a potential alternator malfunction. Given the complexity and potential for electrical damage, I would recommend consulting a qualified automotive technician for a comprehensive assessment. They possess the necessary tools and expertise to diagnose the underlying cause accurately. In my case, a visit to the workshop revealed a defective battery, leading to a replacement cost of approximately 290€.
