Fiat 500 EGR Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Fiat 500 with a diesel engine was experiencing reduced power, check engine light, smoke, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a hissing noise during acceleration. These symptoms suggested a defective EGR valve, which can cause issues like a jammed valve or vacuum leaks. It was advised to check for fault codes with an OBD2 scanner and consider the potential impact on the catalytic converter. The problem was confirmed by a mechanic, who replaced the EGR valve, resolving the symptoms.

Thanks for your input. I did not check for any fault codes yet. Is the catalytic converter affected? How is the EGR valve related to the catalytic converter?

Okay, no worries about the fault codes, but seriously, get one! As for the catalytic converter, a faulty EGR can indirectly affect it over time. If the EGR is stuck open, it throws off the air/fuel mixture, which can cause incomplete combustion. Unburnt fuel ends up going through the catalytic converter and can damage it in the long run. Honestly, based on what you're describing, I'd just take it to a workshop. They can diagnose it properly and replace the EGR if needed. Better than messing with the catalytic converter!

Thank you for the advice! I took it to a mechanic who confirmed the EGR valve was defective and replaced it. The repair cost 355€. The symptoms are now resolved.

Hey there! Sounds rough. I drive a Fiat 500 too, and your symptoms scream EGR valve issues. Has the light only just come on, or has it been a while? The hissing noise could be a vacuum leak, but given the other symptoms, I'd bet the EGR valve is jammed or just plain defective. You might even fail an emissions test like I did, if it's bad enough. Did you check for any fault codes with an OBD2 scanner? That'll tell you for sure if it's the EGR.
