Fiat 500 VANOS Fault

My 2018 Fiat 500, diesel engine, is acting up at 88k km. Check engine light is on, and fuel consumption is up. Reader shows a fault with the inlet VANOS. Similar issues for anyone? Thinking it's maybe a camshaft solenoid valve or a dodgy power supply to it. Thoughts before I start tearing things apart?

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Fiat 500 with a diesel engine is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, with a diagnostic code indicating a fault in the inlet VANOS system. Possible causes include a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or issues with the power supply to it. Suggested solutions include checking electrical connections for corrosion or looseness and considering professional diagnostics to prevent further engine problems.

Check engine light and increased fuel consumption points to a possible VANOS issue. Since you have an error code, the inlet camshaft VANOS system is suspect. Before taking things apart, have you checked the electrical connections to the solenoid valves? A loose or corroded connector can act like a faulty solenoid. What's the specific fault code? That'll help diagnose it.

Thanks! The code is P0011. I gave the connectors a quick look, but I'll check again and use some contact cleaner. Can I test the solenoid valve itself, maybe resistance?

P0011, "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1), points to a mechanical or electrical problem in the inlet VANOS. A resistance test on the solenoid valve might help, but it's not definitive. A real diagnostic uses an oscilloscope to check the signal to the solenoid. Given the symptoms, I'd suggest a qualified mechanic. VANOS issues can cause bigger engine problems, like timing chain issues, if ignored. A professional diagnosis and repair might be best. It's frustrating, but often saves money.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I'll book it in. Seems like a new solenoid valve and fitting will be around 250€. Appreciate the advice!
