Fiat Cronos Overheating and Control Unit Error

I've got a 2017 Fiat Cronos with a gasoline engine, about 175k km on the clock. Lately, the check engine light's been on, and the engine's been running way too hot. I even found a coolant puddle under the front after a drive, which leads me to believe there's excessive pressure somewhere within the cooling system. I'm thinking maybe the thermostat is faulty. I scanned it and I'm getting a control unit communication error. Could it be a software glitch or something more sinister, like a dodgy control module?

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Fiat Cronos is experiencing overheating and a check engine light, with a coolant puddle suggesting excessive pressure in the cooling system. The owner suspects a faulty thermostat and has identified a control unit communication error, raising concerns about a potential software glitch or a faulty control module. A suggestion was made to inspect the cable and plug connections for corrosion or damage, which led to discovering defective connections in the engine control unit, resolving the issue at a cost of 95€.

Sounds frustrating. I had something similar happen with my old Opel Astra. Also a control unit error that was causing all sorts of weird issues. Did you check the cable and plug connections of that control unit?

Interesting! With your Astra, was it throwing similar symptoms – overheating, coolant issues? And when you say check the connections, what exactly am I looking for? Just loose wires or something more obvious?

My Astra wasn't overheating, but I did get random warning lights and the engine occasionally stalled. As for the connections, check for corrosion or any physical damage. Sometimes, a wire can be partially broken inside the insulation, so give them a gentle wiggle. However, with overheating and coolant loss, and with the mileage on your car I would seriously advise you to visit a workshop.

Thanks a bunch for the insight! I'll definitely give the wiring a good look, but it sounds like a deeper dive at a workshop is in order. You were right, the cable and plug connection of the engine control unit were defective. Thankfully, it wasn't too expensive, just 95€!
