Fiat Doblo exhaust treatment malfunction

Hi, I've got a 2009 Fiat Doblo with a gasoline engine and I'm experiencing an exhaust treatment malfunction. The check engine light is on, the engine runs rough, and there's a noticeable exhaust leak accompanied by a strong exhaust smell. I've checked for obvious cracks in the exhaust pipe, but haven't found anything. Could this be related to the EGR valve or maybe the particulate filter, even with these symptoms?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Fiat Doblo with a gasoline engine is experiencing an exhaust treatment malfunction, indicated by a check engine light, rough engine running, and a strong exhaust smell. The issue may be related to the lambda sensor, as suggested by similar past experiences with other vehicles. A diagnostic check confirmed the lambda sensor as the problem, and replacing it resolved the symptoms.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hello, I had a similar issue with my 2014 Opel Astra, although the models are different, the symptoms you describe are very similar to what I experienced. In my case, the culprit was a defective lambda sensor. Have you checked the readings from your lambda sensors? Are there any NOx sensor errors?

Thanks for the tip. I haven't checked the lambda sensor readings specifically. How did you confirm that was the problem? Did you also notice any specific impact on fuel consumption or engine performance besides the rough running?

In my case, the error code specifically pointed to the lambda sensor. Given the exhaust leak and smell, it's certainly worth investigating. I recommend a diagnostic check at a workshop; they can analyze the sensor data accurately. While it could theoretically be related to the EGR valve, the exhaust leak points more strongly to a sensor or exhaust system issue. Best to confirm before replacing parts.

Took your advice and got it checked at a workshop. Turns out it was indeed the lambda sensor, as you suspected. Replaced it, and all symptoms are gone. Repair cost me 375€. Thanks for the help!
